First Stone Laying Ceremony held for the Bamiyan Cultural Centre

June 12, 2016, UNESCO Office in Afghanistan–The official First Stone Laying ceremony for the Bamiyan Cultural Centre was held on the morning of June 12th, 2016, at the construction site, Chawni Hill, Bamiyan, Afghanistan.

H.E. Korean Ambassador Chin Ki Hoon, H.E. Minister of Urban Development Affairs and Housing Sadat Mansoor Naderi, and Bamiyan Governor Thair Zuhair participated in the ceremony to manifest their support in establishing new visions of Bamiyan as a place of peace and reconciliation through culture and the creative economy. Governor Zuhair hosted the ceremony together with the Director of UNESCO Office in Afghanistan Ms. Patricia McPhillips, with the presence of Former Governor of Bamiyan and current Senior Advisor on Women and Youth to Chief Executive of Afghanistan Madam Habiba Sarabi, and Mr. Haji Khalili, the Director of Provincial Council in Bamiyan.

On today’s ceremony H.E. Minister Naderi committed to fund 1.5 million USD for the landscaping of Bamiyan Cultural Centre, with the aim of creating a cultural park around the building. The park will offer a social and family space for the residents of Bamiyan and Afghanistan while ensuring public access to the higher cultural experiences of the visitors.

H.E. Korean Ambassador Chin emphasized in his speech that the Cultural Centre will serve as a “much-awaited, multi-purpose space for cultural exhibition, education and vocational training” which will eventually attribute to the rehabilitation of Afghanistan and its economic development. The ambassador mentioned that he hoped the Bamiyan Cultural Centre becomes a symbol of friendship between the people of Korea and the people of Afghanistan.
